Colossians:3:5-9a: “Be Killing Sin”

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023

Ok, so we’re continuing our study tonight of the letter that Paul wrote to the Colossian church, and we’ll begin Chapter 3 this evening. Specifically we’ll be in Verses 5-9(a). Now last week, we spent our time looking at Paul’s exhortation to use to KEEP OUR HEARTS AND MINDS ON THE THINGS ABOVE. And so, having done THAT, tonight we’re going to look at what Paul has to say about “KILLING THE SIN IN OUR LIFE”. So let’s open our Bibles to the book of Colossians (if you haven’t already done so). And as I say, we’re in Chapter 3 and we’ll be looking at Verses 5-9(a) tonight. So let’s read the text together. And I’m reading from the ESV, the English Standard Version:

[5]  Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

[6]  On account of these the wrath of God is coming.

[7]  In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.

[8]  But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

[9a]  Do not lie to one another…

Intro:

Now, having spent some time LAST week looking at how we’ve died to sin, it might seem strange to learn that living the “risen life” involves putting the sin in our lives to death. I mean didn’t Paul say earlier that that’s already happened? He told the Romans that when we’re saved, “…that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” And that’s TRUE. But that positional reality STILL HAS TO BE WORKED OUT in our lives as believers. It still has to be worked out in how we live PRACTICALLY. Because there can’t be any growth in holiness or any growth in terms of our maturity when the sin in our lives is left unchecked and unchallenged.
